What’s in a name?

in starting weave & seed I relied heavily on feedback from friends and colleagues. in its infancy, the name “weave & seed” was sometimes met with a healthy and appreciated skepticism from some of my dear ones, wondering whether or not it was too esoteric. in a verbose text message, which all of my trusted colleagues and friends are all too familiar with, i once offered this explanation:

“…it is actually a combination of both literal and figurative meaning. The literal meanings do spawn from me - my affinity for the art, simplicity, and culture of all things woven as well as my time in and with the garden. The figurative meanings though are more far reaching.

Weave: bringing many individual fibers/inputs together in intentional concert and even healthy tension with each other to create something powerful and with unique purpose/impact that any one fiber/input could not be on its own; in the real estate context, that’s community & connection. Many brokers conduct pretty transactional real estate. More of a churn & burn through the basics with less time or energy going toward the community as a whole. I try and spend time making sure people are connected to their neighborhood and know about local resources, organizations, and businesses. I think it’s vital.

Seed: a whole life in a very small package whose home is the earth and who literally provides itself so that it can provide for the rest of us. The seed is the environmental and very tangible aspect of land, land use, and our relationship to the earth. I take transacting real estate pretty seriously. We are literally buying and selling pieces of the planet. First of all, that’s kind of wild, and second of all, if we are going to do it, we should really be considering what that means, what our impacts on our environment are, and have a deep reverence and gratitude for it. We should understand the inputs and outputs of our homes and properties as best we can and really consider them (I try to offer education and resources around this).

And I think both the “weave” and the “seed” are what make a place home. An earnest connection to community and to the environment.”

I’ve since come to know our work to be very rooted in this combination:

seed

earth

environment

wisdom

nature

grounded

sustained energy

individual

weave

equity

community

presence

nurture

elevated

cohesive tension

collective

I hope this explanation offers a deeper understanding of the intentionality behind “weave & seed.” It’s about being more than a real estate company, actually an integrated real estate practice.
